UEFA To Discuss Future Of Champions League On Wednesday

Mar 30, 2020 1:17 PM

UEFA will meet on Wednesday to discuss the future of the Champions League.

Aleksander Ceferin, the president of European football's governing body, recently said that the season would be lost if it could not restart by June.

"UEFA has invited the general secretaries of its 55 members associations to a video conference on Wednesday 1 April at midday to share an update on the progress made by the two working groups that were created two weeks ago and to discuss options identified with regards to the potential rescheduling of matches," a UEFA statement said.

"The meeting will look at developments across all UEFA national team and club competitions, as well as discussing progress at FIFA and European level on matters such as player contracts and the transfer system."

The meeting will discuss the possibility of playing behind closed doors.

Both the Champions League and Europa League were suspended in the round of 16.

Bergamo Mayor: Atalanta-Valencia Match Was 'Biological Bomb'

Mar 25, 2020 1:00 PM

Bergamo mayor Giorgio Gori said he believes that the Champions League match between Atalanta and Valencia at the San Siro is partly responsible for the outbreak of COVID-19 in his region.

The match was attended by 44,000 fans.

"The match was a biological bomb," said Gori in a Facebook interview.

"At that time we did not know what was happening. The first patient in Italy was on February 23. If the virus was already circulating, the forty thousand fans who went to San Siro were infected.

"No one knew that the virus was already circulating among us."

A third of Valencia's team also tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after.

Gori added that there other factors for the spread of the virus in northern Italy.

"The match didn't cause everything because the spark was really at the Alzano Lombardo hospital, as a patient with unrecognised pneumonia infected patients, doctors and nurses."

Marcos Llorente: Belief Is Part Of Atletico Madrid's DNA

Mar 24, 2020 4:11 PM

Marcos Llorente discussed Atletico Madrid's comeback win against Liverpool in the Champions League round of 16, saying that belief and faith were crucial to his side's success.

"We knew we were going to have our chances," he said.

"Faith is part of Atletico Madrid's DNA, you always have to believe.

"I remembered all my family, all those who have supported me at all times and all my teammates."

Llorente moved to Atleti from Real Madrid over the summer.

Llorente, who has yet to hold down a first-team place, said he is focused on training.

"I always work to my maximum level to be ready and available for when the coach needs me, in whatever position. Work and effort always have a reward, our obligation is to train every day and give everything in those sessions so that when the opportunity comes we are prepared to take it."

Papu Gomez: Playing Valencia-Atalanta Match Made Situation Worse

Mar 23, 2020 7:36 PM

Atalanta playmaker Papu Gomez said that playing the Champions League match between his side and Valencia at San Siro worsened the COVID-19 situation in Bergamo.

Northern Italy is one of the hardest hit regions of the virus. More than 40,000 supporters attended the match.

Atalanta chose to play the match at San Siro due to construction at their home stadium.

“At the start there was a lot of misinformation, we all took it lightly. We thought it was just another strain of flu and so we continued to lead a normal life. When the deaths started, we started to feel afraid. Someone [at San Siro] was infected. We’re all waiting to see if any of us show symptoms.

"Playing those games was terrible. There were no checks in Valencia, everything was relaxed. I think the situation in Bergamo today has something to do with the Champions League game at San Siro. There are 12,000 inhabitants here and 45,000 were at the stadium that day," said Gomez.

Gomez added that it's difficult to focus on football.

“We’ve made a whole city happy in the last four years, but what we’ve been experiencing lately is something terrible, which I still can’t understand.

“We’re the country with the most infections after China, it’s strange. The people of Bergamo should be happy right now, proud of what its team are doing, but instead we have to focus on something else and think about the families that are suffering.

“I’m with them, they’re strong people who aren’t giving up and this period will come to pass.”

Mar 17, 2020 1:43 PM

Valencia said that 35% of their backroom staff and players tested positive for COVID-19.

"Several further tests for the COVID-19 coronavirus amongst Valencia coaching staff and players have come back positive," said the club in a statement.

Ezequiel Garay and Eliaquim Mangala were among players who confirmed they had tested positive.

Valencia had traveled to Milan to play Atalanta in a Champions League match before sporting restrictions were placed in Italy.

"Despite the strict measures adopted by the club after their Champions League game ... these latest results show the exposure inherent to such matches has caused a positive test rate of around 35%," Valencia added.

"All cases are asymptomatic and those involved are currently isolated at home, receiving medical assessment and carrying out their scheduled training plan."
